In light of the new Maybach cabrio coming out I glanced at the website. The Maybach S550 is 166k and the Maybach S600 is 191k
So the S550 is 66k more and the S600 is 20k, which begs the question if you’re gonna buy an S600 why not pony up for the Maybach?
Which also begs the question, how is the S65 the highest model in the range? I was certain the maybach would be the highest model.

I didn’t even know there was a non-Maybach S600.

Oh yeah! and How!
I feel like if you’re paying 170k you’re BOUND to have some 20-30k in options, and the maybach probably has many of those options as standard.
hmmm

I don’t get it, isn’t this why the previous Maybach failed? That it was identical to the cheap plebeian S Class?

well now it’s just a nicer trim so it can’t technically “fail”
But...yes?

They need to get rid of the non-Maybach S600 and the Maybach S550. The AMGs are at least a little different.

yeah the Maybach S550 is particularly interesting, why does it exist at all?

God help them, I don’t know why they priced the standard S600 higher than the Merc-Maybach S550. The only thing I can think of is that they’re trying to sell more of them so they’re keeping the price slightly lower to convince buyers to just go with the maybe-Maybach instead of the standard 600 which is what owner-drivers would want anyway. And this is to say nothing of the fact that an S550 Maybach is an affrontery because real Maybachs all had V12 engines as standard.

I get the sense that the $50k+ price jump from the non-Maybach S600 to the S65 is mostly a mix of paying for the prestige and maybe a little idiot tax. There doesn’t really seem to be a reason for the 65 sedan to cost $230k. I understand that the 65 is a little mechanically different and makes a fair bit more power, but every thing else in interior, suspension, body kit, and brakes is similar if not the same as a loaded S63 which also comes to about $160k.
The V8 in the 63 is actually the superior engine right now. The Merc V12 is lacking in midrange torque compared to other modern engines, which is the exact opposite of what you want from a 12 cylinder. It revs up too much and doesn’t at all drive like it should, especially considering how good the TTV8 from the 63 is.
Also I think the appeal of the S550 Maybach is that it’s 4Matic. The V12 cannot be had with AWD but it is standard on the V8 Maybach.

The vast, vast majority of S600 owners in the US drive their own cars from what I’ve seen. Having a driver is very, very uncommon in the US but S600s are all over the place.
If someone wants a big, comfortable car with a V12 which they drive themselves, then the extra wheelbase is just going to be more annoying than anything else. That 8 inch increase in length is not trivial when parking or changing lanes in traffic. At 214 inches, the Maybach will start running into issues with sticking out too much when perpendicular parked, let alone issues with parallel parking. A lot of people also don’t want the styling of the coupe or more often they still use the rear seats for friends/clients/family on occasion. You can’t exactly expect anyone but children to sit in the back seat of the S coupe.
I have an A8L which most of the time I’m the only person in it. When I replace it, if I get another Audi it’s going to be a a SWB A8 or S8. It’s not just about automatically getting the bigger car because it’s only marginally more expensive.

The S550 Maybach has AWD as standard. None of the V12 S-classes get that.
I’m not saying it’s right, but that’s most likely the reason it exists.

NO. NO NO NO. What if I want a V12 S class but don’t want a harsh AMG, or a gigantic limousine with the driving dynamics of the Chyenne mountain complex ? 600/S600 is historical to Mercedes. You’ll notice it’s pretty much the only model designation that never changes.
